Biden Passes Torch to Harris at Democratic Convention
In an emotional and historic moment, President Joe Biden passed the torch to his vice, Kamala Harris, on the first night of the Democratic National Convention, Excel Magazine International can report.
Biden, who dropped out of the presidential race last month and endorsed Harris, was greeted with thunderous applause and chants of “Thank you, Joe!” as he took the stage.
The convention, which featured a range of speakers including Hillary Clinton and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, marked a new chapter for the Democratic Party as it ushered in a new generation of leaders.
Biden’s 50-minute speech touted his administration’s accomplishments and warned of the threat posed by Republican nominee Donald Trump.
The night also saw several labour leaders pledge their support for Harris, with United Automobile Workers President Shawn Fain calling Trump a “scab” – a term used to describe someone who undermines organised workers.
Despite protests outside the convention center over the Biden administration’s support for Israel’s war in Gaza, the issue received little mention during the speeches.
Harris is set to formally accept the Democratic nomination later this week, and her campaign has hinted at a possible speech by a Palestinian representative.
The convention continues on Tuesday, with more speeches and events planned.
