Liberian President, Joseph Boakai Announces 40% Salary Cut
Liberia’s President, Joseph Boakai has announced a 40% reduction in his salary, aiming to set a precedent for “responsible governance” and demonstrate “solidarity” with the Liberian people.
Excel Magazine International reports that government salaries have been under intense scrutiny recently as citizens grapple with the rising cost of living.
In Liberia, approximately one in five people live on less than $2 (£1.70) a day. Mr. Boakai, whose annual salary was $13,400, will see it reduced to $8,000 following the cut.
This move mirrors the action taken by his predecessor, George Weah, who reduced his salary by 25%.
Reactions in Liberia have been mixed. While some praise Mr. Boakai’s decision, others question its significance, noting that the president also receives benefits such as a daily allowance and medical cover. The presidential office’s budget stands at almost $3 million this year.
Anderson D. Miamen, from the non-profit Centre for Transparency and Accountability in Liberia, welcomed the pay cut.
“We just hope that the public will clearly see where the deductions will go and how they will be used to positively impact the lives of the people,” he told the BBC.
W. Lawrence Yealue II, from another transparency organization, described the decision as “very commendable,” adding that leadership should set the example. He expressed hope that the president’s benefits would be reviewed in the next budget.
In addition to reducing his salary, Mr. Boakai has pledged to empower Liberia’s Civil Service Agency to ensure public servants receive fair compensation. Recently, a group of lawmakers protested the lack of official cars by arriving at parliament in tuk-tuks, known locally as keh keh.
Excel Magazine International recalls that Mr. Boakai assumed office in January after defeating Mr. Weah in a run-off election.
Committed to tackling corruption and financial mismanagement, he has declared his assets and ordered an audit of the presidential office, with results pending. Mr. Boakai has also strengthened the General Auditing Commission and the Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission.
