Senegal’s President Forms New Government with Fresh Faces
Senegal’s President, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, has announced the formation of a new government on Friday, appointing several newcomers to key positions following his decisive election victory last month.
Excel Magazine International reports that Faye, 44, secured a first-round win with a pledge of sweeping reforms, making him the country’s youngest president despite no prior elected experience.
Faye is expected to work closely with his appointed prime minister and former mentor, Ousmane Sonko, who played a crucial role in Faye’s political ascent.
Sonko, 49, introduced a 25-member cabinet on Friday, emphasizing a departure from past practices.
Describing the new government as a departure from the norm, Sonko emphasized its alignment with the transformative agenda supported by Senegalese voters.
Sonko, a key figure in Senegal’s anti-establishment movement, backed Faye in the presidential race after being disqualified himself due to a defamation conviction.
Birame Souleye Diop assumes the role of energy minister, crucial given Senegal’s impending oil and gas production starting in 2024. Meanwhile, Ousmane Diagne, a former public prosecutor, takes charge of the justice ministry.
Notably, the cabinet includes four women entrusted with portfolios such as foreign affairs, fisheries, family, youth, and culture.
Senegal grapples with significant challenges, including a 20 percent official unemployment rate. Sonko outlined the government’s priorities, which include tackling youth unemployment, reducing living costs, and safeguarding human rights.
